Thaddeus in Maine had melted a scale in August of 1992 when he was trying to dry it out after "heavy mist".  The halogen light fell on it and for 5 full minutes had its way with the scale.  Amazingly, we were able to repair it.  the only damage was to the case, the sensor (once it was no longer squished by the case) was totally undamaged.  We gave it a new case and sent it back, where (as far as I know) it is still alive and well a decade later, in 2002!
